The 1976 UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules entrust the PCA's Secretary-General with designating appointing authorities upon the request of parties to ensure the advancement of arbitral proceedings.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea provides for arbitration as the default dispute settlement mechanism. The PCA has acted as registry in several UNCLOS arbitrations.
