From January 31 to February 7, 2009, the Secretary-General visited Delhi, India, at the invitation of the Indian Society of International Law on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The Secretary-General was invited to speak at its inauguration in the presence of the Vice President of India, Shri Mohammad Hamid Ansari, and spoke also at one of the panels on international arbitration. The Secretary-General met with the Indian Minister for Law and Justice, Dr. H.R. Bhardwaj, and other prominent members of the Indian legal community.

The Secretary-General also visited Bangladesh on February 5, 2009, where he met with the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Hasan Mahmud, the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Md. Touhid Hossain, and the Minister of Law, Mr. Shafique Ahmed.
